The January contract price for ethylene has been set at a rollover of €970/t FD Northwestern Europe, just like that for polyvinyl chloride this week. ‘European producers have followed ethylene trend and decide to roll prices over in Europe,’ a market player has told. However, a Central European manufacturer has tried to raise quotes by €20/t for this month. ‘We will not accept these prices, since there is no tendency to increase’ a trader has said. A Northwestern European one has announced a $10/t rise in prices to Turkish players.

PVC spot quotes have been stable in Europe since the end of last year. K67 has still cost €760—780/t FD Northwestern Europe, €760—790/t FD Southern Europe and €750—780/t FCA Central Europe. K70 has been on offer at €780—800/t FD NWE, €780—810/t FD SE and €770—810/t FCA CE. A Czech producer has quoted European buyers €720—730/t FCA for K67. A Ukrainian one will struggle to increase prices by €5—10/t for January. A Hungarian supplier has offered K70 and K58 at $880/t CFR Turkey, with prices being very competitive there.

Buying activity has been moderate, according to market players. ‘Window profile industry is doing pretty well now, but PVC pipes one is wishing to be better,’ a Dutch market player has commented. Bulgarian participants have kept expressing keen interest in European PVC. A Ukrainian supplier has reported that Polish buyers have become less active this month.

Prices are expected to be static in all the regions. Supply will be in line with moderate demand. Some producers will insist on increasing quotes, but market players will hardly accept this.
